SAN DIEGO (AP) - Officials say all of the schools in the city of San Diego and many in more than 20 surrounding cities will be closed on Thursday as at least a half-dozen wildfires burn in the area.

The San Diego Unified School District said in a statement Wednesday that all of its more than 200 schools serving more than 130,000 students will be off as the fires burn amid high heat. None of the blazes are burning within the city of San Diego, but about a half-dozen are burning in the northern County, and a new one broke out in the Lakeside area to the east of the city.

That new blaze, which broke out near Interstate 8 late Wednesday afternoon, prompted the evacuation of 1,300 new homes.
