NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City man has been sentenced been to life behind bars for his role in a sex trafficking ring.

Judge Katherine Forrest announced the sentence on Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan.

Prosecutors had accused Isaias Flores-Mendez of smuggling impoverished young women from Mexico into the New York City area and forcing them into prostitution.

Some of the women were driven to rural New Jersey to have sex with up to 25 farm workers a day. Others were confined to dingy brothels in the New York that advertised their services with business cards passed out on street corners.

The 48-year-old from Queens had pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, interstate transportation for prostitution and other charges.
