KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Members of Congress from Michigan want federal regulators to choose a cleanup option for a toxic Kalamazoo landfill that would promote redevelopment of the site.
The Allied Landfill contains 1.5 million cubic yards of waste tainted with cancer-causing polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to choose a cleanup plan this year. Among options are hauling the waste to a commercial landfill, covering it with soil or other material, or putting it in a new landfill on the Allied location.
In a letter to the EPA, Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Rep. Fred Upton say anything short of removing all the PCBs may hamper redevelopment. They also ask the agency to monitor the city’s drinking water for signs of contamination from the Allied site.
