GARY, Ind. (AP) - The Gary City Council has decided to allow a councilman to keep his position while he spends three months in federal prison for failing to file federal income taxes.
Council members declined Tuesday to force Ronier Scott out of office but did vote 8-0 to withhold his pay while he’s in prison. The Post-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1gDO1OA ) council president Kyle Allen wanted Scott ousted so the council could maintain its sense of integrity and ethics, but other members didn’t support the move.
The 42-year-old Scott pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor tax evasion in February. Scott would have to forfeit his seat if convicted of a felony. He said he won’t resign because he needs to support his family.
Scott reported to prison on May 6.
