SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A state of Illinois employee has been named by the White House a “Transportation Champion of Change.”

The award to Illinois Department of Transportation worker Wanda Vazquez honors Americans who are making positive changes in their communities.

Vazquez is an IDOT traffic safety liaison at Rincon Family Services in Chicago. She has been a mentor and trainer for Hispanic advocates in the Chicago area. She helps them become certified child passenger safety technicians.

As a motivational instructor, Vasquez teaches students how to correctly install safety seats and help families understand the importance of them.

Vasquez received her award at the White House. The ceremony was the latest in a series of celebrations of ordinary people doing special things.
