BALTIMORE (AP) - The University System of Maryland Board of Regents named former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke president of the University of Baltimore on Wednesday.

University of Baltimore’s president, Robert Bogomolny, is stepping down after 12 years. Schmoke will take office in July.

Schmoke served as mayor of Baltimore from 1987 to 1999 and was previously state’s attorney and an assistant federal prosecutor.

“Schmoke has an outstanding record of accomplishments and he understands that the University of Baltimore’s mission is closely aligned with the advancement of the city,” University System Chancellor William E. Kirwan said in a statement on the university’s website.

Schmoke is currently interim provost and general counsel at Howard University in Washington. He was dean of the Howard law school from 2003 to 2012.

He has been in private practice with Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering and with Piper and Marbury.

Schmoke earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University, was a Rhodes Scholar and earned a law degree from Harvard University.
