“American Idol” star Clay Aiken was certified the winner of the North Carolina Democratic congressional party with a lead of less than 400 votes, just one day after his main contender, Keith Crisco, was found dead in his home.
The election was actually held May 6, but the tally was so tight — Mr. Aiken ultimately came in with 11,678 votes and Mr. Crisco, at 11,288 — all eyes were watching the certification process for confirmation, CNN reported.
A third candidate, Toni Morris, secured 5,616 ballots, CNN said.
The election swirl stalled a bit on Monday, when Mr. Crisco was found dead in his home and Mr. Aiken sent out a statement saying he was suspending his campaign for a short time.
“He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant,” Mr. Aiken tweeted about Mr. Crisco.
Now Mr. Aiken is set to run in November against Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers, who has represented the conservative district for two terms so far.
