SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation that forces political nonprofits to reveal their donors, after out-of-state groups funneled $15 million in anonymous contributions into California initiative campaigns.
Brown said Wednesday that he signed SB27 by Democratic Sen. Lou Correa of Anaheim.
It requires tax-exempt nonprofits involved in politics to report their donors and campaign committees that raise more than $1 million to list their top 10 contributors.
The state’s political watchdog agency said donors in 2012 gave secret contributions to an Arizona nonprofit that channeled the money to California campaign committees. The so-called “dark money” was meant to oppose Gov. Jerry Brown’s successful tax increase initiative and support a separate failed initiative to limit unions’ ability to raise political funds.
The new law applies to contributions made after July 1.
