CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The House has sent Gov. Maggie Hassan a bill that would bar New Hampshire employers from discriminating against victims of domestic violence and other crimes.

The House voted 190-137 Wednesday to pass the Senate bill that makes it illegal to refuse to hire an otherwise qualified individual who is a victim of domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault or stalking. The bill also makes it illegal to fire, threaten to fire, demote or otherwise discriminate against the victims.

The penalty is a civil penalty imposed by the labor commissioner.

Supporters argued the bill helps keep the victims from being victimized again at work. Opponents said there is no evidence of a problem warranting the bill and argued it should be studied instead.
