TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - One of the suspects in a shooting near Florida State University has been charged with armed robbery and other felonies, Tallahassee police said.
Authorities said Arthur James, 40, and Tommy Jackson, 39, were fleeing an armed robbery scene Monday and were shot by officers who were chasing them. Part of the chase wound its way through FSU’s campus.
Jackson later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Six officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, though not all fired their weapons. Officers Doug Clark, Steven Britt, Derek Kidd, Ray Garcia, Brian Perry and Matthew Wagner are all under review to determine if they followed department policy.
Police have said Jackson shot at officers. But police spokesman Scott Beck said Wednesday they are still investigating who shot first and whether James fired at police.
James is being charged with armed robbery with a firearm, burglary with person assaulted and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Additional charges are expected.
Police said investigators have conducted more than 20 interviews and have reviewed surveillance video and police vehicle video.
“As with all investigations, it is important not to rush to judgment until all the facts are gathered and the results are presented to the State Attorney’s Office,” police chief Michael DeLeo said in a statement.
Police roped off multiple crime scenes Monday, including two near the Florida State Fine Arts building.
The Violent Crimes Unit and the Internal Affairs Unit both responded to the scene, which is common practice following instances where a suspect is injured as a result of an officer shooting. Investigators from the State Attorney’s Office also responded at the request of the police department.
