KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) - U.S. Sen. John Walsh is proposing a bill that would keep public lands open when the federal government shuts down.

Last year’s partial government shutdown over the federal budget closed Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, along with Bureau of Land Management lands and U.S. Forest Service facilities and services.

The Flathead Beacon (bit.ly/1nEmpQZ) reports Walsh’s bill to be introduced Tuesday would continue funding for public lands at the previous year’s levels if there is another shutdown.

It would cover national parks, wildlife refuges, forests, BLM land and other public lands.

Walsh is running to keep the Senate seat he was appointed to in February. If Walsh wins the Democratic nomination, his likely opponent will be Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Daines.
