LAS VEGAS (AP) - Elected officials have launched a Las Vegas version of a White House effort to push boys and young men of color toward success.
Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford, superintendent Pat Skorkowsky and others met Tuesday morning with boys from West Preparatory Academy to kick off the initiative.
The local effort aligns with the White House’s “My Brother’s Keeper” project, which aims to close achievement gaps and address the disproportionate number of black and Hispanic men who are unemployed or in the criminal justice system.
Foundations have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to the initiative, and Nevada companies including MGM Resorts and NV Energy have committed to supporting the project.
