IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The University of Iowa is offering a new program meant to prevent online thieves from stealing employees’ identities and financial information.
The school said Monday that it’s launching a new verification tool called Duo that employees can voluntarily use on its internal human resources site.
Employees will be asked to provide a phone number, where a verification code will be sent to complete the enrollment process. Similar identity verification will be required periodically.
The program comes after university employees fell victim to a series of phishing scams last fall. In some cases, thieves were able to access the site to change bank account information to steal automatically-deposited paychecks.
Since then, the university has banned access to many functions from off-campus locations. Enrolling in Duo will restore off-campus access.
