ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State University says it will lay off nearly 90 part-time and temporary workers as the school attempts to cut spending and balance its budget.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (https://bit.ly/1g4o1Rv) the employees affected by the decision received termination letters on Tuesday from the university’s human resources director. The letter cited “significant budgetary challenges” as the reason for the decision.
The letter informs employees that their employment with the university will end at the close of business on Thursday.
Many of the terminated employees served in support positions across various departments. The university plans to reassign full-time staffers to cover those duties.
It’s the second round of layoffs made by the university since announcing a deficit recovery plan created to reduce a $13 million shortfall.
