David Berkowitz, a.k.a. the “Son of Sam” serial killer, has been skipping his parole hearings because he’s already been freed in spirit by Jesus, his attorney said.
Berkowitz, who’s serving time at Sullivan Correctional Facility for shooting and killing six and maiming seven others, has skipped out on seven straight parole hearings since 2002. But that’s because “Jesus has forgiven him and set him free,” his lawyer, Mark J. Heller, told the New York Post.
Berkowitz, raised a Jew, has recently joined the behind-bars Jews for Jesus and converted to Christianity, Mr. Heller explained. He’s now serving at the prison as an assistant to the minister.
“David told me that the reason he has never sought freedom from the parole board by attending parole hearings is because ’Jesus has already freed my heart, soul and mind and has forgiven me,’ ” Mr. Heller told the New York Post reported.
Berkowitz — who claimed his neighbor’s dog, Sam, ordered him to kill his victims — has his next parole hearing in 2016.
