Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan said Tuesday there were warnings signs that the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was vulnerable to an attack before the death of four Americans on Sept. 11, 2012.
Mr. Rogers, Republican who chairs the House intelligence committee, said he reviewed 4,000 classified cables as part of the investigation that has resulted in a GOP-led select committee to get to the bottom of what led to the attack and how the White House responded.
“It was very clear that the security situation was deteriorating rapidly,” Mr. Rogers told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Mr. Rogers stopped short of declaring that U.S. officials knew an attack was imminent on the day it occurred. But he did say that one week before the attack, security officers told Americans at the consulate they were “going to die here” if they did not change their security posture.
“If we whitewash this today,” Americans will be harmed at outposts elsewhere, the congressman told MSNBC.
