San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is known for his mouth on the sidelines, but he’ll probably tone it down a notch when he delivers Catholic University’s graduation address this Saturday.
The university said Tuesday the pro athlete, who played for N.C. State University and has gone to five Pro Bowls, will also receive an honorary degree on the east steps of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Northeast D.C.
A February announcement touting his planned speech praised Mr. Rivers as a devout Catholic who “finds time to attend Mass before every game.”
The university noted he is married to his high school sweetheart, Tiffany, with whom he has seven children, and that he is involved in charity work for abandoned and orphaned children.
In considering whom to invite as our Commencement speaker, the University is happy to find a role model who can inspire our graduates and deliver a message appropriate to this milestone in their lives,” CUA President John Garvey said at the time.
“Philip Rivers is just such a person. He is a great athlete and a fierce competitor. He is also someone who cares even more about his faith and his family than he does about football. We are delighted to have him as our 2014 Commencement speaker.”
