CLEVELAND (AP) - The Catholic diocese in Cleveland is requiring its teachers to sign a contract specifying prohibited violations of Catholic doctrine, such as homosexual activity and artificial insemination.
The Plain Dealer (https://bit.ly/1iJAZiw ) reports the contract for teachers at more than 100 elementary schools in the diocese is similar to one the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is requiring its teachers to sign. That contract has sparked protests, petitions and billboards opposing it.
Both contracts also ban public support for positions that are contrary to Catholic doctrine.
Church officials say the contracts don’t require anything new, but more clearly detail activities already prohibited.
The newspaper says the contract in the Cleveland diocese applies to elementary schools that are part of that diocese. Diocesan high schools are unionized, and their contract changes must be negotiated.
