PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former North Providence police office serving time for burglary and other charges is asking a judge to reduce his 20-year sentence.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1mRh9dA ) Michael Cierci spoke for 25 minutes during a hearing in Superior Court on Monday, apologizing for his crimes and telling Judge Robert Krause that he is ready to become a productive member of society.

Cierci, who cannot be released until July 2025 under his current sentence, was arrested in 2007.

A jury convicted him of burglarizing homes in Pawtucket and North Providence, using a firearm in the commission of his crimes and harboring a criminal.

The state attorney general’s office opposes any early release.
