With nine players representing their respective countries in the 2014 World Championships, the Capitals had legitimate concerns someone could get injured during the two-week tournament taking place in Minsk, Belarus.
That fear was realized on Monday when Caps defenseman Dmitry Orlov told reporters he suffered a broken arm in Russia’s 6-1 win over the Americans on Monday.
“My arm is broken and I can’t turn it, so there is no point in suffering and trying to play,” Orlov told reporters. “I’d only be a burden to my team.
“I have contacted the Washington Capitals and will be going to America, where I will see a doctor in Washington or New York.”
In three games with Russia, Orlov, 22, had one assist and a plus-3 rating. In 54 games with the Capitals this season, primarily on a second unit with Mike Green, Orlov had three goals and 11 assists and a minus-1 rating.
The Capitals re-signed Orlov to a two-year, $4 million contract extension two months ago.

Other Capitals participating in the tournament include Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov (Russia), Mikhail Grabovski (Belarus), Jason Chimera, Joel Ward and Troy Brouwer (Canada), Philipp Grubauer (Germany) and David Leggio (USA).
