AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler says Maine must expand Medicaid and access to early childhood education, reduce food insecurity and eliminate gender inequality in the workplace to help women and families succeed.
The independent candidate challenging Republican Gov. Paul LePage unveiled his policy ideas regarding women’s issues on Tuesday.
Among Cutler’s priorities is to increase the minimum wage and implement a tiered welfare system so recipients don’t lose all their benefits the minute they get a job. Cutler says he would also work to remove restrictions that prevent MaineCare coverage for abortion services in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is at risk.
Cutler is in a three-person race for the Blaine House with the Republican governor and Democratic candidate U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
