BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Police in Buffalo have charged a 24-year-old woman with leaving her five children, four of them under age 4, home alone on Mother’s Day.

Officials say Buffalo firefighters responding to reports of a smoke alarm sounding at a home found the children alone inside around 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities say the alarm went off because the stove had been left on and smoke poured from the appliance.

The mother was charged with endangering her children by leaving them alone without adult supervision. Police say she told officers she had gone to her mother’s home for food.

Officials say her children are being cared for by their grandmother.
