CHICAGO (AP) - To help launch the 2014 boating season, the Illinois Conservation Police is offering free boat inspections.

Authorities will go through a checklist to see that boaters have working life jackets, fire extinguishers, navigation lights and battery covers. One thing the officers won’t do is write tickets for violations - at least not for that one day of free inspections.

The inspections will be available on Friday at multiple locations across Illinois. That’ll include Rock Island’s Sunset Marina, Lake Springfield’s Lindsay Boat Launch, Murphysboro’s Kinkaid Lake and the 31st Street Harbor in Chicago.
