HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu is opening a long-awaited wait list for a voucher program that provides help with paying rent.

The city closed its waitlist for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program in 2005 when more than 10,000 families applied.

Applications will be accepted online from Thursday through May 21. Only one application per household will be accepted.

After the closing date, only a predetermined number of applicants will be randomly selected and placed on the wait list.

For those without computers, a terminal is available at the city’s Section 8 offices downtown and in Kapolei.

The federal government’s voucher program helps low-income families, the elderly and the disabled afford housing in the private rental market.
