CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston County Republicans have again voted to censure U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for being too liberal.
The party’s executive committee voted 39 to 32 to complain about Graham’s positions on a number of issues, The Post and Courier of Charleston (https://bit.ly/1uYChj5) reported.
Those included Graham’s support for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominees and cooperating with Democrats.
Charleston County Republicans’ executive committee voted unanimously four years ago to censure Graham for not being Republican enough.
Republican National Committeewoman Cindy Costa called Monday’s vote “foolish.”
“Terrible. It’s a dumb thing to do,” said Costa, who did not take part in the vote. She said precedent is being set to now “censure” Republicans any time they stray.
Supporters of the resolution criticizing Graham said they wanted to make a statement.
“I want my politicians to be more conservative,” said Tom Sheridan of James Island.
Cameron Groen of Johns Island said he wanted Charleston County Republicans to “distance” themselves from Graham.
“He really represents the establishment and the ’usual’ in Washington,” Groen said.
Graham issued a statement saying he’s taking his conservative message to the 20,000 Republicans in Charleston County expected to vote in the June 10 primary.
Graham faces six opponents, Columbia minister Det Bowers, state Sen. Lee Bright of Spartanburg; Upstate businessman Richard Cash; Orangeburg lawyer Bill Connor; Columbia lawyer Benjamin Dunn; and Lowcountry businesswoman Nancy Mace.
