WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - One of the bridges connecting the island of Palm Beach with the mainland has closed for about six months.

The Flagler Memorial Bridge shut down Monday morning. Police were on standby in case of possible backups resulting from the closure, but no major issues were reported.

The 76-year-old bridge connects Palm Beach and West Palm Beach and is showing signs of age. The Palm Beach Post reports the closure will give crews time to build a foundation for a replacement bridge.
