TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Tallahassee police confirmed than an armed robbery suspect is dead after being shot by officers during a foot chase.
Police say Tommy Jackson and Arthur James were fleeing the scene after officers were called to a reported armed robbery Monday.
Police attempted to stop the suspects’ vehicle, which crashed into a tree. James and Jackson ran.
Police say Jackson, 39, exchanged fire with multiple officers before being struck in what investigators called a “violent confrontation.” He was taken to a hospital and died Monday evening.
James, 40, also was shot and taken to the hospital. He was in custody Tuesday.
Police spokesman Scott Beck said six officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, though not all fired their weapons.
Officers Doug Clark, Steven Britt, Derek Kidd, Ray Garcia, Brian Perry and Matthew Wagner are all under review to determine if they followed department policy.
“The safety of Tallahassee citizens is our highest priority,” police chief Michael DeLeo said. “I’m relieved our officers and bystanders were not injured during this incident.”
Beck said they were still investigating who shot first and whether James fired at police. He didn’t know how many shots were fired.
Police roped off multiple crime scenes Monday, including two near the Florida State Fine Arts building.
The Violent Crimes Unit and the Internal Affairs Unit both responded to the scene, which is common practice following instances where a suspect is injured as a result of an officer shooting. Investigators from the State Attorney’s Office also responded at the request of the police department.
