RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - House Speaker Thom Tillis already gets noticed for his work in the North Carolina General Assembly. He’ll get special attention from political friends and foes alike with his new title as U.S. Senate nominee.
Tillis won last week’s Republican U.S. Senate primary over seven other rivals. So everything he does during the roughly two-month session will be viewed through the lens of his candidacy and efforts to defeat Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in November.
Tillis doesn’t anticipate any changes from the conservative policy agenda that he’s run on during the year in which he’s been a Senate candidate. But a critic who wants Hagan to win says Tills will try to promote moderate ideas to fix the damaging agenda he’s pushed while speaker for three-plus years.
