PITTSBURGH (AP) - Five western Pennsylvania county jail employees that were suspended without explanation last week no longer work for the county.
Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs confirmed their status Tuesday, but says the county won’t comment further.
Downs last week declined to say whether the employees - a captain, two sergeant and two guards - were suspended because of an incident in which an employee violated policies at the Pittsburgh lockup by bringing a handgun into the facility.
That employee self-reported that she had entered the jail with her personal handgun May 1. All contraband items including handguns are prohibited in the jail.
Downs said last week that employees are subject to a strict security protocol while entering the jail, but that “employees responsible for the oversight had violated policy.”
