MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Legislature has adjourned without setting a date to consider any gubernatorial vetoes, but the speaker of the House says he doesn’t think a veto session will be needed.
Legislative leaders don’t have the authority to call the House and Senate back into session if Gov. Peter Shumlin vetoes a bill or if legal staff finds a technical problem that requires the rejection of a bill.
House Speaker Shap Smith tells the Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1mSnkd0 ) Shumlin assured legislative leaders he would call the Legislature back if he vetoed anything, which isn’t likely.
Smith says House and Senate leaders worked hard to eliminate points of contention that could have led to vetoes.
Last year, the Legislature set a date for a veto session, but it wasn’t needed.
