BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - River Plate defeated Argentinos Juniors 2-0 on Sunday, putting it in position to win the Argentine first division with one round of matches to play.

Gabriel Mercado and Teofilo Gutierrez scored for River, which has 34 points from 18 matches, two clear of Estudiantes and three ahead of Gimnasia.

Mercado scored in the 69th minute, and Gutierrez added the clincher eight minutes later.

River is trying to win its first league title in seven years, and its first since being relegated to the second division in 2011. It plays at home Sunday against Quilmes.

“This was a key game for us, but we have to keep it up,” coach Ramon Diaz said. “One game is left and we play at home, and we always play well at home. We hope to finish it up there.”

In other results Sunday: Belgrano 0, Arsenal 0; Quilmes 2, Gimnasia 0; Boca Juniors 3, Lanus 1.
