Rep. John Conyers Jr., Michigan Democrat, has fallen short of obtaining the necessary amount of signatures to run for re-election.
His opponent, Democrat Horace Sheffield, filed a complaint with Michigan election authorities after he found that some of Mr. Conyers’ campaign workers — the ones sent to gather signatures — weren’t registered state voters in accordance with law, Breitbart reported. The state, in turn, threw out the signatures that weren’t valid, leaving Mr. Conyers shy of about 400 names.
Mr. Conyers’ lawyers are appealing the decision, but in the meantime, the congressman is officially ineligible to seek re-election.
Former Rep. Thaddeus McCotter faced a similar situation in 2011 and ended up seeing him name omitted from the voter ballots that year.
