DETROIT (AP) - Records show nearly $240,000 in travel, gas and IKEA furniture was charged on credit cards of the chancellor of a state turnaround school district.

The Detroit News reports (https://bit.ly/QzdPo4 ) Monday that the expenses charged by John Covington and his staff included $178,000 on hotel and airfare for travel to 36 cities from April 2012 to February. Other expenses included $25,000 at IKEA.

The Detroit News obtained statements through the Freedom of Information Act.

Terry Abbott, an EAA spokesman, says the cards were in Covington’s name but were used by office staffers and don’t include personal expenses. Abbott says internal procurement policies were followed and some travel was for teacher training. He says the IKEA charge bought school furniture.

State lawmakers are considering whether to expand the district beyond Detroit.
