Rausch not seeking re-election to NH Senate

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Derry Republican Jim Rausch announced Monday he will not seek re-election to the New Hampshire Senate.

Rausch said he leaving after 14 years in the House and Senate to spend more time with his family. He said his first grandchild is due this fall.

“Throughout my time in the Legislature, my goal has been to try and solve problems in order to improve our state and the lives of my constituents,” Rausch said in a statement.

As Senate Transportation Committee chairman, Rausch is known for fighting to raise revenue for the state’s highways. He supported the Senate’s efforts to legalize casinos and earmark money for highways, which the House rejected.

This year, he sponsored a 4-cent increase in the gas and diesel tax, which Gov. Maggie Hassan is expected to sign. Hassan said she was honored to work with Rausch on the bipartisan solution to strengthen the transportation system.

“Senator Rausch’s commitment to improving our infrastructure will be a lasting legacy, improving our economy and the lives of commuters for years to come,” said Hassan.

Senate Republican Leader Jeb Bradley said Rausch’s gas tax bill will ensure completion of the Interstate 93 expansion.

“During his 14 years in the House and Senate, Senator Rausch became a go-to source on transportation, infrastructure and public works issues,” said Bradley of Wolfeboro.

Rausch also was a co-sponsor on changes to the state’s education funding formula.

“His service to his constituents, community and the state throughout his career in business and public service provides a clear example of the kind of civic-mindedness that makes New Hampshire great,” said Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem.
