LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say an injured hiker and a companion were flown by helicopter out of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area during a weekend rescue operation.

Police say the 34-year-old woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of a reported head injury after a fall of about 15 feet little before noon Saturday on the White Rock Springs trail.

The woman and her companion were hoisted into the helicopter from a rock crevice in what was described as challenging terrain at an elevation of about 6,100 feet above sea level.

Authorities say it was the 38th search and rescue operation by Las Vegas police this year.

Red Rock Canyon is a popular hiking and climbing area about 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas.
