LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Plans to begin installing new synthetic turf at New Mexico State University’s football stadium have temporarily gone to the birds.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports (https://bit.ly/1iH1itT) a family of Western burrowing owls has dug into a corner of the field at Aggie Memorial Stadium and two other pairs are nesting below the Stan Fulton Center.

NMSU President Garrey Carruthers says the school will wait for the birds’ hatching period to be over before installing the turf this summer.

Meanwhile, they have put up fencing and signs to warn visitors away and will begin removing grass Wednesday.

The university announced in March that businessman Stan Fulton, a longtime supporter of the school, donated $1 million for new turf.

The project is estimated to cost $1.37 million.
