KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - The state Department of Environmental Conservation is holding comment sessions on plans to address impacts from the release of muddy water from one of New York City’s upstate reservoirs into a creek that flows into the Hudson River.

Releases from the Ashokan (uh-SHOH’-kihn) Reservoir into the Esopus (ee-SOH’-puhs) Creek have been the subject of conflict in the upstate watershed for several years. The city releases muddy water into the creek to keep it out of the drinking water system. The creek is sometimes so muddy it looks like chocolate milk, and sediment has built up in many areas.

Ulster County Executive Mike Hein has asked DEC to include structural changes to the reservoir to reduce the need to discharge muddy water.

The first comment sessions are Monday afternoon at Ulster County Community College.
