Newport Hospital holding forum to address increase in overdose deaths in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Newport Hospital is hosting a forum with state and local officials to address the increase in overdose deaths in Rhode Island this year.

The forum scheduled for May 19 aims to highlight the steps relatives and friends can take to help those struggling with addiction.

Among those scheduled to attend are Craig Stenning, director of the state agency that oversees behavioral health, and James Gillen, director of the Anchor Recovery Community Center.

The forum will be followed by a screening of “Anonymous People,” an independent documentary about those fighting substance abuse problems. The showing will be at the Jane Pickens Theatre.

The state health department has reported 90 accidental overdose deaths so far this year.
