ATLANTA (AP) - Fulton County prosecutors say a convicted drunk driver has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a crash that killed an 11-year-old boy.

Officials said in a statement that 44-year-old Gatha Dyer was sentenced Monday morning on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless driving in the death of Patrick Williams, who was a student at McNair Middle School.

Officials say Williams was trying to cross a street in southwest Atlanta April 1, 2013 when Dyer hit him. Officials say the boy was thrown 53 feet and landed on another car’s windshield. Officials say Dyer slowed down before fleeing the scene and was on probation for another DUI accident in Cobb County at the time.

A witness followed Dyer to get his tag information and gave it to police.
