SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Carlsbad businessman David Sepich has been named by Gov. Susana Martinez to a commission overseeing the state Department of Transportation.

Sepich fills a vacancy on the state Transportation Commission created by the resignation of Robert Wallach of Hobbs.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sepich would serve a term running through 2018.

The six-member commission sets policies for the department, which is responsible for New Mexico’s road network.

Sepich runs a commercial cleaning business.

Sepich and his wife have lobbied across the country for states to enactment what’s known as “Katie’s law” to require DNA samples from individuals arrested or charged with certain crimes.

The legislation is named in memory of their daughter, Kathryn Sepich, a New Mexico State University student murdered in 2003.
