BOSTON (AP) - Boston has signed a sister city agreement with Belfast, Northern Ireland, to strengthen the links between the cities and nurture cultural, economic, educational and religious partnerships and exchanges.
The deal was signed Monday by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Belfast Lord Mayor Mairtin O Muilleoir (mar-CHEEN’ O MOO’-lor) at a breakfast hosted by the Irish American Partnership.
Walsh says the agreement speaks to the cities’ “historic connection, genuine ties and linked heritage.”
O Muilleoir says the cities already share “enduring links of history and heritage,” and notes that Boston is a leader in the life sciences while Belfast has the fastest growing knowledge economy in Europe.
Boston already has sister city agreements with Kyoto, Japan; Strasbourg, France; Barcelona, Spain; Hangzhou, China, Padua, Italy; Melbourne, Australia; Taipei, Taiwan; and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana.
