LOS ANGELES (AP) - Annika Dries broke a tie with the first of Stanford’s four fourth-quarter goals and the top-ranked Cardinal won the NCAA women’s water polo title Sunday night, beating UCLA 9-5.
Stanford 34-1 avenged its only loss of the season to win its fourth title and third in four years.
No. 2 UCLA (27-5) led 5-3 at the half, but could not score in the final two quarters. UCLA had its chances offensively but could not capitalize on the power play, going 0 for 5, including 0 for 3 in the third.
Stanford tied it with 2 seconds remaining in the third quarter and scored on three consecutive possessions in a 1:23 span to put it out of reach.
Dries led Stanford with three goals and Ashley Grossman and Kaley Dodson each had two.
Kodi Hill, Mackenzie Barr, India Forster, Kelly Ronimus and Alexa Tielmann scored for UCLA.
In the third-place game, third-ranked Southern California beat No. 4 California 11-8.
Eike Daube and Monica Vavic had three goals for the Trojans (26-4). Roser Tarrago and Ashley Young each scored twice for Cal (20-10).
