SHELBY, N.C. (AP) - Shelby police say a man is charged with shooting and killing his 17-year-old girlfriend.

Police Chief Jeff Ledford says 19-year-old Aaron Byers faces murder and other charges in connection with the shooting death early Saturday of Hannah Carol Bickley. As officers responded early Saturday to a call about a possible armed robbery and shooting, a man flagged them down and said a woman inside his vehicle had been shot.

Ledford said officers found Bickley in the vehicle with a single gunshot wound.

Byers was taken to Cleveland County Detention Center. It wasn’t known if he has an attorney.

Hannah’s father, Guy, tells WCNC that his daughter had just texted him after she got off work at the Waffle House. He says Hannah was studying to become a nurse.
