BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador says federal labor laws should permit 16- and 17-year-olds to work in mechanized logging operations, provided they’re under parental supervision.
Labrador is proposing to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Spokesman-Review reports (https://bit.ly/1jvmioc ) Labrador has introduced a bill called the “Future Logging Careers Act.”
The bill would allow younger teenagers to work in family logging operations. Labrador says similar exemptions are in place for family-owned agricultural operations.
Labrador is up for re-election. His challengers include Republican Sean Blackwell of Rathdrum. Democrats running include Shirley Ringo, of Moscow, and Ryan Barone, of Hayden.
