A man is dead after gunmen stormed a 1-year-old’s birthday party in a Sacramento park and opened fire, injuring six others including a 7-year-old child.
A Natomas-area neighborhood is reeling after gunmen approached a baby’s party on foot and began firing about 5 p.m. Saturday at Peregrine Park, said Officer Doug Morse, Sacramento police spokesman, the Sacramento Bee reported.
“I just dove to the ground. There was about 25-30 shots that rang out, everyone was screaming and yelling and just running all hysterical,” a witness, who did not want to be identified, told CBS Sacramento.
The victim who died was a man in his 20s, but he was not identified.
Police said the other six victims, including the 7-year-old, had injuries that were not life-threatening and were expected to survive.
“There was one kid shot in the leg, the other guy was shot who died … and there was a couple people around the corner [with] wounds to the leg and to the back,” the witness said.
The suspects fled in a vehicle, though police said they were not ready to release a description of either the shooters or vehicle.
Police think the shooting may be gang related.
“Some folks approached the party, shots were fired,” said Mr. Morse. “Our gang detectives were called out so we are going to try to get to the bottom of that.”
