WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - Recent state legislation will require police departments that take on newly-hired officers to reimburse the municipalities that paid for their training.
The Republican-American reports (https://bit.ly/1hG4wdt ) that the measure requires police departments that hire an officer who has completed police certification within two years to reimburse the department that trained the officer. The reimbursement amount includes the cost of training in the police academy, equipment, salary and fringe benefits paid during the training period.
Drafters of the bill estimated the cost to train an officer between $70,000 and $120,000.
Waterbury’s police union says the new legislation holds officers hostage by preventing them from pursuing better paying jobs.
Mayor Neil M. O’Leary says the legislation will provide stability to larger police departments. He says nine officers have left Waterbury for New Britain.
