CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois state Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka will honor 14 young Asian-Americans from the Chicago area for their commitment to community service Monday.
The event at the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago coincides with Asian-American Heritage Month. It will include a fan dance by the Chinese Mutual Aid Association and remarks from Chicago news anchor Judy Hsu as well as Topinka.
Community organizations will have exhibits from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In addition to the individual awards, Topinka will present the first-ever John Vietnam Nguyen Asian-American Youth Leadership Award to the nonprofit Asian-Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago.
Nguyen was a community leader and college student in 2012 when he drowned after saving the life of another student.
