PHOENIX (AP) - The union that represents Phoenix police officers wants a city resolution to impose pay cuts put before voters.
The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association on Friday announced it is seeking to put the issue on a ballot referendum or initiative.
The Phoenix City Council voted 5-4 Wednesday to enforce new contracts on officers, whose union had balked at accepting cuts to salary and benefits of 2.5 percent over two years.
PLEA President Joe Clure says if approved, the vote would take place in March 2015.
City officials say a special vote would cost more than $1 million.
Union representatives say they will start gathering signatures for a referendum.
They say nearly 17,000 valid signatures are needed within 30 days to make to onto the 2015 ballot.
