RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Communities across North Carolina are joining the nation in an observance of the importance of trains.
Amtrak observes its seventh annual National Train Day on Saturday. Events in the state are free and open to the public.
People can join the celebration by visiting open houses at train stations along the rail corridor including Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Burlington, High Point, Greensboro, Salisbury, Kannapolis, Charlotte, Selma, Wilson and Rocky Mount.
Celebrations feature train-themed games, model railroad displays and a chance to win train tickets. There’s also a free shuttle transfer from the Salisbury rail station to the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer.
Also, children ages 2 through 12 can ride for $5 one way to and from any North Carolina destination on the Piedmont and Carolinian trains and NC Thruway Services.
