NFL draft: Redskins draft Clemson DB Bashaud Breeland, 102nd overall

With their fourth round pick in the NFL draft on Saturday, the Redskins selected Clemson corner back Bashaud Breeland.

Breeland was projected as a possible second or third round pick. Instead, he had to wait an extra 12 hours once selections ended on Friday.

“It was a tough night, but I kept my face,” Breeland said. “It helped me get through the night. I knew the draft wasn’t over. As long as I get a shot, that’s all I need.”

That won’t come right away. The Redskins have DeAngelo Hall, one of Breeland’s favorite players growing up, and David Amerson returning, too. They also signed free agent Tracy Porter. Breeland says his advantage is the ability to play multiple positions, not just corner, and had special teams experience in college.

Breeland’s decision to turn pro was rooted in financial concerns, he said. He has an 11-month-old daughter, Jaelle Nicole Breeland. He started 12 games for the Tigers in 2013 and had two sacks and two forced fumbles.

NFL.com’s scouting report cited raw tackling technique and lack of strength as weaknesses. But he is a good cover corner even without elite speed.

“I just want to come in and help the team in any way I can, just make a positive impact,” Breeland said. “Whether it’s on special teams, whether it’s coming off the bench playing, whether it’s starting. Whatever my role is, I want to play and do well enough to help the team win.”
